We are delighted to share our new narrative sound design show reel with you all. This reel contains highlights from many of the narrative projects we have worked on, and greatly demonstrates the versatility of our team, as well as the expertise and consistent quality that we bring to each project we are involved with.

Our 2021 narrative sound design show reel shows off an array of projects that we have contributed our sonic expertise towards, and covers the full range of our services including dialogue editing, Foley, sound design, sound supervision, audio restoration, music composition and mixing.

As with all show reels, it can be a fine balance between purely  showing off our technical expertise, and delivering something that is engaging for the viewer. We feel that our new show reel achieves this balance perfectly, due in no small part to the stunning visual components taken from the amazing projects we have worked on.

We'd like to thank all of the directors we have worked with for entrusting us to carry out their sonic vision, and giving us the freedom to truly flex our muscles as audio post professionals.

Projects

Today we are back with another news post, and we have something a little special in store for all of you...

For those of you that have been following 344 Audio for a while, you will know that we have been very prolific in developing our extensive range of in-house sound effects libraries. We are now proud to announce that we have taken a step into the world of sample libraries for musicians and will be releasing our first ever custom-built Kontakt instrument called Glass Bottle Percussion.

Glass Bottle Percussion is a unique and innovative percussion library that is constructed entirely of sounds we have produced using a selection of antique glass bottles. This library is well suited to a wide range of musical styles, and will be a welcome addition to the arsenal of many music makers who are looking for a great-sounding percussion instrument that also gives a little bit of something extra.

We have specifically designed this instrument to be a dynamic and versatile tool, and one that will feel just at home in a techno track as it does in a cinematic or hybrid film score composition.

Our brand-new Kontakt instrument -  Glass Bottle Percussion.

Glass Bottle Percussion contains 4 velocity layers and 3 round-robins for maximum playability and expression. There is an array of built-in effects for you to play with such as reverb, delay, and filters as well as an integrated arpeggiator function that lets you create interesting rhythmic patterns and puts a Glass Bottle symphony at your fingertips. As well as all of these functions contained within the core instrument patch, we also have created 7 additional "design" patches that includes tonal sounds, such as pads and plucks, plus a few abstract patches that take things in a more experimental direction.

Of course, no sample library would be complete with some killer demo tracks to show off what it can do. The team have been hard at work creating a selection of different tracks that showcases the range of Glass Bottle Percussion, which you can listen to in the playlist linked below:

The team writing code for the Kontakt scripting engine.

The development process of this library has been incredibly organic, and has utilised the full skill sets of everyone in the team. There were however several new processes that we had to get to grips with and implement to bring this library together, such as scripting and working within the Kontakt engine.

The team hard at work editing and testing the library.

Recording bottle hits using a hard beater.
The extensive range of different patches contained within the library.

We are really proud of how the team has came together to create this product and we cant wait to hear what our talented community creates with it!

We hope you enjoyed this news post!

Projects

We are pleased to share with you a recent promotional video project that we completed for the new energy drink COMMAND from MyPROTEIN.

COMMAND is a new energy drink from MyPROTEIN that is specifically aimed at gamers.

We know that milliseconds can be the difference between winning and losing — so you need to make every moment count.

Key features of this product include:

  • 180 mg of caffeine for improved focus and concentration.
  • Vitamin A contribute to the maintenance of normal vision.
  • Zero sugar, zero calories!
  • Zinc contributes to normal cognitive function.
  • Zinc and Vitamin A contribute to the maintenance of normal vision.
  • Vitamin B6 contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism.

The concept of the campaign video was to highlight the similarities between top gamers and professional athletes, and show that COMMAND fuels them both equally. The "split screen" format is a really clever nod to multiplayer gaming and effortlessly demonstrates the message of the campaign.

This campaign is unique and highlights the growing shift in the nutrition & supplements market away from hardcore gym-goers to a wider audience. No longer are energy and performance drinks solely for athletes and sportspeople, but can be enjoyed by gamers, programmers, stock traders or anyone else who wants to be at the top of their game and maintain a competitive edge.

In terms of our sonic approach, we wanted to create a solid blend between both the gamer and the boxer and maintain a "high-energy" feeling. To achieve this we chose to emphasise the sound effects in a way that gave them a strong rhythmic quality, whilst matching the tempo and intensity of the videos electronic soundtrack.

This project marked another successful collaboration with MyPROTEIN following on from our previous work on their #IAMREADY campaign video.

Moving Mountains Commercial Goes Live

We worked on the new mouth-watering commercial from Moving Mountains, showcasing their new range of meat alternative burgers.

Projects

We are pleased to announce the release of the new mouth-watering commercial from Moving Mountains, showcasing their new range of meat alternative burgers.

Plant Based

Moving Mountains Foods have made a name for themselves by offering a diverse range of plant-based alternatives for traditionally carnivorous meals such as hot dogs, sausages, meat balls and mince. The latest addition to their product line comes in the form of plant-based burgers, and we were thrilled to be involved in the creation of a mouth-watering commercial to accompany the product launch.

This project marked another collaboration with director Kaine Levy, who we previously worked with on Farewell Waltz. Kaine was at the helm of this commercial in the role of director, which made the process extremely fun and streamlined given our existing shorthand from previous collaborations.

Kaine had this to say about working with us:

This was another enjoyable and smooth session with the guys at 344 Audio, and they worked closely with us to elevate the production value of the commercial. We started by purposely “overdoing” the foley effects so we could present the client with a more unnatural but exciting sound mix. From there we reigned it back slightly, finessing and tweaking all parts of the music and sound design to reach a perfectly balanced final mix. Our client, Moving Mountains, was very happy with the final result, and a happy client is a happy production company!
Making a mess in the foley room whilst recording custom sound effects.

Custom Sounds

To create the sounds for this video, we first undertook a foley recording session and assembled a custom library of culinary and food effects for us to use in the commercial. This was a really fun part of the process, and involved us getting stuck in and making a bit of a mess in the studio but it was all worth it!Some of the sounds we recorded include:

  • Chopping vegetables
  • Peeling and squeezing bananas
  • Crunching lettuce
  • Emptying cat food from a tin
  • Squeezing sauce from a bottle
  • Oil sizzling in a pan
  • Meat juices dripping
Recording cookery sounds in the kitchen.

Early on in the process, we took the decision to only used food-based sounds in this commercial. This meant that we had to create all of the whooshes and transition effects from the food sounds that we recorded during the foley session. We found this to be a really fun challenge and it definitely led to some interesting results.

Some of these sounds included whooshes made from sausages and lettuce, impact sounds made from dropping vegetables and meat on a chopping board, and subtle juicy textures made from various vegetables being squished.

Alex fine-tuning the mix for maximum deliciousness.

Ironically, although the commercial is for a vegan product, we ended up using a lot of meat based sound effects to really give the video that mouth watering, stomach rumbling effect. When it comes to sound design, sometimes only the real thing will give you the result you are looking for. We hope you can forgive us for this!

Product Reviews

Company: Effectsworks

Product: Vintage Buttons and Mini Mechanicals

Price: $38

Our Rating: 4.6/5

Vintage Buttons, Switches & Mini Mechanicals is a sound effects library from EffectsWorks.com that covers an extensive selection of switches, bolts, buttons, hand-operated gadgets, gizmos and tools.

Huge Variety

Vintage Buttons, Switches & Mini Mechanicals combines high fidelity and meticulous recording with a vintage aesthetic and massive variety. This library gives you access to a huge assortment of sounds covering many different subjects and types of commonly used objects.

The sounds are extremely well recorded and have a unique character to them. Effectsworks have clearly gone the extra mile when it comes to finding interesting types of buttons and mechanisms to record, and you will have no shortage of captivating sounds to use in your projects.

What you get

This library contains a total of 235 high quality sound effects in 96kHz 24 bit Wav format. All sounds were recorded using a Neumann KMR 81i and received light dynamics processing through Izotope RX7.

In their own words, here is Effectsworks giving a brief background on this library:

This pack contains over 1400 sounds sourced from a variety of vintage gear from the 1970s and 80s, ranging from old analogue sound equipment to obscure kitchen tools. This pack works great for Foley or just as sonic inspiration and would be ideal for use in games or movies. All samples were recorded at high-spec to enable high quality pitch shifting and easy sample manipulation. Also where possible all sounds were recorded in a treated studio for maximum sound isolation.

Just some of the subjects covered within this vast library include:

  • Alarm clocks
  • Phone handles and switches
  • Keypads & buttons
  • Metal bolts
  • Reel to reel tape recorders
  • Vintage cameras
  • Suitcase handles & locks
  • Flashlights
  • Paddocks
  • Seatbelts from various vehicles & aircraft

As you can see, there is a massive variety of content contained in this library, making it highly usable through a range of different types of projects.

Neumann KMR 81i used to record this library.

Where we would use it

We really like how "grounded" the sounds in this library are. Everything has a raw and realistic texture to it that is brilliant for "grounding" a scene and making character prop interactions feel genuine. We would use this library to cover character interactions with buttons and mechanical props, as well as a starting point for more heavily designed sounds.

Given the large amount of variety, this library is well suited for use across a wide array of projects and genres. Having a large bank of interesting and unique button and mechanism sounds will be extremely useful considering that these kind of effects will be needed across most films in one scene or another.

We would recommend this library to any audio professional who is looking to expand their sound effect collections, and is looking for some really strong mechanical based sfx. This product would also be useful for game audio designers to use for interactable objects, or anything involving buttons, levers and switches.

The Bottom Line

Vintage Buttons, Switches & Mini Mechanicals gives you a ton of variety for a very accessible price. The technical execution of the recordings is very strong, and we love how authentic and unique the sounds in this library are. This product is a highly worthwhile addition to any sound designers toolbox and should have its place on everyone's shopping list.
