Work Overview:

344 Audio was brought on to provide Foley recording and editing for Cocktail 2, a major Bollywood production that required authentic, performance-driven Foley delivered on an exceptionally tight turnaround.

As the sequel to a well-known Indian film, the project needed to honour the sonic identity audiences already associated with the original while elevating it with the polish and detail expected from a modern, high-budget cinematic release.

Objectives:

1. Create authentic Foley that reflected Indian environments, materials and character performances.
2. Deliver a fully edited, mix-ready Foley session within an extremely compressed production schedule.
3. Ensure every movement, footstep and prop performance enhanced the emotional storytelling while integrating naturally into the film's musical and dramatic moments.

Approach:

Rather than relying on generic Foley surfaces and props, we adapted our recording process to better reflect the realities of Indian environments.

Working closely with our Indian Foley artist, Preetham, we researched the materials and textures audiences would instinctively recognise, replacing more familiar Western surfaces with granite and stone to accurately recreate the footsteps and movement found throughout the film. We also sourced authentic props, including traditional jewellery and accessories, to capture distinctive character details that would feel genuine on screen.

To further support authenticity, our team drew on location recordings captured in India during earlier research, giving us additional real-world references for environmental textures and prop interactions.

Performance was just as important as the sounds themselves. With multiple characters sharing similar wardrobe and footwear, subtle differences in movement became essential. Confident, purposeful walks were performed with clean, decisive heel-to-toe movement, while hesitant or nervous performances were reflected through more restrained, cautious footsteps. These nuanced performances helped distinguish characters without drawing attention away from the story.

The production schedule left virtually no room between Foley completion and the final dub, so every recording was edited, organised and prepared into a Pro Tools session that could be dropped directly into the mix. This mix-ready workflow allowed the production team to move seamlessly into the final stage without additional Foley preparation, helping keep the film on schedule.

Special consideration was also given to the film's musical sequences. Working alongside the creative direction from the production, we selectively omitted Foley where it would not feature in the final mix, while carefully shaping key moments so important impacts and movements retained enough presence to cut through the music when required.

A fully authentic, mix-ready Foley soundtrack delivered under significant time pressure, exceeding the client's expectations and earning praise from both the production team and members of the film's audience for the quality of its sound work.
