REVIEW: BOOM Library - liftFX

Audio Post Production Manchester

Company: Boom Library

Product: liftFX

Price: £89

Our Rating: 4.5/5

liftFX is a new plugin from industry leading sound effects company Boom Library. It is a fantastic tool for quickly building risers and drops into your project. It works as a generator plugin or virtual instrument, and is playable in real time with instant visual and audio feedback. With an impressive array of presets and built-in FX, liftFX gives you everything you need to create stunning transitions that are perfect for use in movie trailers and for the dancefloor.

Rise to the challenge

Much of modern electronic music and movie trailers are built around build ups and risers. liftFX allows you to create these very quickly, playing them in with your keyboard as you would with any other synth. It gives you the option to play sounds forwards and backwards, and lets you control parameters with automation or the mod wheel. There are a range of built in FX and filters that can be tweaked to further shape your sound. All of this functionality lets you modify the presets to your liking. Everything can be synced to your project tempo and BPM, making this plugin extremely versatile.

As well as for use in electronic music, liftFX is also be great for music composition and sound design, especially for deep cinematic bass sounds. All of the presets sound huge straight out of the box, so it is a great tool for quickly adding a cinematic edge to you soundtracks and trailers.

The preset bank is neatly laid out, and breaks sounds down into uplifters, downlifters, simple, complex, tonal and rhythmic.

There are also bonus FX that contain more musical sounds like bass patterns and chords.

It would have been great to have more control over the sounds themselves, as I also found there to be a lack of more organic sounding presets, but this is a very minor negative given this plugins focus as a tool for electronic music.

We will use this plugin to create a strong starting point for a riser, before adding our own custom built sounds on top.

The Bottom Line

Fundamentally this plugin sounds great, and its ease of use makes it a great addition to any producers toolbox. Its clean and initiative GUI makes this a great plugin for beginner producers, who may be intimidated by more complex tools.
